Colombia's President Warns 'I Would Resort to Weapons Again' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

President Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have turned up the volume of their war of words, increasing strains in their relations after US forces struck Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He operates drug factories and processing labs and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Growing Tensions coupled with Claims

Addressing journalists over the weekend, Trump threatened similar armed intervention against Bogotá, asserting the country is also "very ill" and “run by a problematic figure involved in producing cocaine and trafficking it to the US."

While Colombia is the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way involved in the illicit industry.

A Frayed Alliance

Colombia was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the fight against drug trafficking and benefited from wide political approval in the US capital, however, the relationship have soured significantly after Trump was elected.

Its drug trade is largely controlled by illegal armed groups including the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters disbanded subsequent to a landmark accord.

The President's Defiant Rebuttal

When asked if a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good to me personally."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the 1990s, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am not an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he affirmed.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. And if they detain me, which a large part of the population loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," Petro warned.

From Insurgent to Statesman

The president dedicated part of his youth participating with the radical M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed that he never participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in creating the constitutional rewrite in the early 90s and later became a prominent senator. He was mayor of Bogotá prior to his election president.

"I made a vow to abstain from using arms again ... but for Colombia I would take up arms again," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief reported that the president’s protection team had been reinforced.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, however, leaders from all sides of the political spectrum have condemned the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Pressure

Washington withdrew his travel authorization after he urged US military personnel to ignore any illegal orders. Months later, the US enacted economic restrictions on Petro, his wife and a number of close collaborators.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces near Venezuela and striking alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out attacks against vessels in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
