A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
